This position is to provide emergency medical care and transportation to patients in a variety of healthcare and field environments, including hospitals, clinics, assisted living facilities, and outdoor or uncontrolled settings. As an EMT, the role involves rapid assessment, stabilization, and treatment of individuals experiencing medical emergencies, trauma, or other urgent health conditions. This position requires strict adherence to OSHA safety standards and universal precautions due to the inherent risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious materials. The EMT must operate safely and effectively under pressure, often in poorly lit, high-stress, or extreme environmental conditions, while ensuring compliance with organizational protocols and patient care standards.

Major Responsibilities

  • Emergency Medical Response
    Respond promptly to emergency calls, assess patient conditions, and provide appropriate pre-hospital care in accordance with established protocols.

  • Patient Assessment and Stabilization
    Perform physical assessments, obtain vital signs, and administer life-saving interventions such as CPR, bleeding control, and airway management.

  • Safe Patient Transport
    Safely transport patients to medical facilities while monitoring and continuing care en route, ensuring patient comfort and safety.

  • Infection Control and Safety Compliance
    Adhere to OSHA standards and universal precautions to prevent exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious materials.

  • Documentation and Reporting
    Accurately document patient care, observations, and interventions in electronic or written reports for medical and legal purposes.

  • Equipment Maintenance and Readiness
    Inspect, clean, and maintain medical equipment and supplies to ensure readiness for emergency response.

  • Communication and Coordination
    Communicate effectively with dispatch, medical personnel, and other first responders to coordinate care and ensure continuity.

  • Patient Advocacy and Support
    Provide emotional support and reassurance to patients and families during high-stress situations, maintaining professionalism and empathy.

  • Training and Continuing Education
    Participate in ongoing training, certifications, and drills to maintain licensure and stay current with medical protocols and procedures.

  • Environmental Awareness and Scene Safety
    Evaluate and secure emergency scenes to ensure the safety of patients, bystanders, and EMS personnel.

Minimum Job Requirements

Education

High school diploma or GED.

Completion of a state-approved Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training program.

Certification / Registration / License

Current EMT certification through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT).

Valid unencumbered Georgia state EMT license.

Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

Work Experience

Knowledge of emergency medical care, trauma response, and patient assessment

Proficiency in CPR, AED use, airway management, and bleeding control

Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions under pressure

Strong communication and documentation skills

Physical ability to perform demanding tasks in varied environments

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

This position requires the ability to lift, carry, and maneuver patients and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds. EMTs must frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, and reach while providing emergency care, often in physically demanding and high-stress situations. Fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination are essential for operating medical equipment and performing life-saving procedures. Adequate visual and auditory acuity is necessary to assess patients and respond effectively to emergencies. The work environment varies widely and includes hospitals, clinics, assisted living facilities, and outdoor or uncontrolled settings.

EMTs are regularly exposed to extreme temperatures, poor lighting, inclement weather, and potentially hazardous conditions. There is a high risk of exposure to blood, body fluids, and airborne pathogens, requiring strict adherence to OSHA and CDC infection control guidelines.

The role may involve irregular hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended shifts. EMTs must remain calm, focused, and effective in emotionally charged and unpredictable environments.

Preferred Job Requirements

Education

Associate degree in Emergency Medical Services, Health Sciences, or a related field

Certification / Registration / License

Advanced certifications such as Advanced EMT (AEMT) or Paramedic

Experience

Experience in high-volume EMS systems, trauma response, or critical care transport

Prior work in rural, urban, or disaster response environments

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Familiarity with electronic patient care reporting (ePCR) systems

Bilingual or multilingual communication skills

Knowledge of local EMS protocols and regional healthcare systems
